Gritty Gowanus is no longer the ignored industrial wasteland of New York real estate- it’s an up-and-coming neighborhood with plenty of cool underground charm. In the quest of a renewed community, many of the former warehouses have been converted to lofts and the canal is being cleaned up. Quirky and cool venues have opened up and there are some great eateries. If you want to be part of a cool neighborhood without pretention, edgy, and still possesses genuine Brooklyn cool vibes, Gowanus is for you.

Edge comes with a cost, however, so if you work uptown, you are looking at a forty-minute commute to midtown if you’re taking one of the five trains in the area. Yet, many residents love the remote feel of Gowanus. At least if you’re driving, the Brooklyn Queens Expressway is easily accessible. There are five schools in Gowanus, including Islamic school, Al-Madinah. However, for the most options, you may have to look outside the neighborhood. Fortunately, Park Slope is right next door.
